FOCUS Standards

The Foundation of High Quality Services

FOCUS Accreditation organizational standards are updated every 3 years.

FOCUS uses a consensus approach to developing and updating standards. A review of current literature, legislation, and writings on quality in the community human services sectors, along with an extensive comparative analysis of similar standards, are conducted. While labour intensive, FOCUS views this approach as the best approach because it directly involves those people who have a stake in the quality of services provided, people using services, their family members where appropriate, people directly providing services, representatives from funding bodies, professionals in the sectors, among others.

The purpose of the standards is to improve the quality of services being provided to the people who use them. The standards reflect current stakeholder expectations, research, accepted international successful practices, and legislation related to human services.

Of importance, the standards were written in a manner that enables organizations to maintain and protect their unique culture, offerings and approaches.

The standards are organized by domains. There are 11 “core” domains, which apply to all organizations regardless of the types of services they provide. There are six “service-specific” domains, and each contains standards that are unique to specific types of services; one, some or all may apply to an organization, depending on the services they offer.

FOCUS is pleased to support the improvement of service quality for organizations of all sizes, by making a sample of our standards available free to organizations who request a quote for our services. For those who register with FOCUS, a complete set is provided. If you would like a trial of our standards, please email or call us at 1.866.805.2600
